Sculpting: My new art and some thoughts on my old

Fri May 2, 2008, 6:34 AM
A few months back I decided to flip my art medium to something a bit different from digital art. I was having problems with my eyes staring at the screen for long periods of time, they tended to ache and I was getting really unpleasant migraines. I spent a long period of time not really doing much art at all, around a year in total. Not to mention my girlfriend being diagnosed with a brain tumor (she is fine now thankfully) so my work kind of took a back seat.

Sometimes however this can be a good thing. You can really think separately from the grind of producing painting after painting. It's not always how an artist can get the best from his/her abilities. I found myself studying other peoples work, looking at real life, studying anatomy and being inspired by movies and music.

On Christmas 2007 my girlfriend bought me an art book based on the Beowulf movie. One night, whilst reading it in bed, I saw some movie sculptures made out of something called 'super sculpey' Considering this was not looking at the screen for hours on end and it really interested me to 'have a go' at sculpting, I decided to order some materials from ebay and a few other places and give it a go.

It turns out that I actually enjoy sculpting more than I do digital painting, it seems more creative from a personal perspective. I felt like my digital art was stoic and dull, sometimes I didn't produce 'bad' work but it's all part of the learning process I guess. Something that always bothers me about digital art is that it never really exists as such, it's an image on a screen or a print out for the most part. Not a massive problem as such, more of a niggling detail as far as my own work was concerned. That's not to say I have given it up. I will continue to stay multi format. :)

Of course, not to take away anything from digital artists, it really is a skilled craft and I have been /am in contact with many great and ultra talented people in many areas.

I hope that I will continue to be and that I continue to learn and 'meet' new people though the media I choose to work with.

See you around all!

Nice, congrats!

Yeah, we're doing ok, we've just moved office (again) so we are setting up at the moment. I spend most of my time actually running things rather than designing things though...but as long as the money is coming in, I'm good with that.

ta for going so unbelievably far out of your way to ban someone who contests your opinion. only now do i realise that you have zero interest in hearing what others think, only in making yourself heard.

thats a years worth of submits lost.

but you made your point, and thats all that matters.

You wasn't banned for disagreeing with me, you was banned for using the most disgusting language you could think of.

Not called for.
